What weather stripping does
It is a flexible strip fixed to the door frame (the door stop) that presses lightly against the door when it is closed. It does not hold the door shut. It simply closes the gap so air, water and small animals cannot get past.
When to replace it
Vinyl and rubber harden in Ontario winters and bake in summer sun, so most stripping needs replacing every few years. If you can slide a finger or a coin between the strip and the door when it is closed, it is no longer sealing. We fit new stripping to match the door and check the door stop at the same time.
Part of a complete seal
Stripping covers the sides and top. The rubber along the bottom is a separate part. See our bottom seal page. We often fit both together, which makes the biggest difference in a cold garage.

How long does weather stripping last?
Usually a few years, depending on the material and how much sun and cold the door gets. Cracked, flattened or loose stripping should be replaced.
